A total of 3,115 adults lived in sheltered housing in 2025. Eighty-one percent of them were women, with the majority seeking shelter because they had experienced violence. For men, the most common reason was leaving organized crime or facing crime-related threats.
"It is clear that who lives in sheltered housing is changing, as the legislation has been broadened and now includes all people who need support and protection from threats or violence," says Stina Hovmöller, head of unit at the National Board of Health and Welfare, in a press release.
