International Athletics Federation (WA) decided in the spring to introduce mandatory sex tests for all who want to compete as a woman. Now it is clear that women who will compete in the World Championship in Tokyo in September must be tested.

From and with September 1, the new rule of athletics regarding sex tests for women applies. The World Championship starts on September 13.

We have known that this has been going on, but that it came now and that it will be in play already for the World Championship was a bit of news for us, says David Fridell, secretary general of the Swedish Athletics Association, to Aftonbladet.

–There is a lot to be done before a World Championship normally and this becomes a bit of an extra burden. But we had already gotten a "heads up" from WA. And we have had conversations today about how we will coordinate this for those who will participate in the World Championship, that is what is most urgent. During the month of August, all those who are relevant for the World Championship in the women's class will do tests.

Sex tests are done through saliva or blood tests.

We are fundamentally positive. It's about protecting the women's class and really making sure that the competitions are fair. I think the entire athletics family stands behind that, says Fridell.
