The national arena Wembley in London has a spectator capacity of 90,000, but the big club's plan is that the new arena will have room for an additional 10,000 spectators. It will be located next to the current arena Old Trafford, which accommodates 74,000 spectators.
Our current arena has fulfilled its function for the past 115 years, but is now far from the best arenas in the world. By building on the same site, we can preserve the essence of Old Trafford and at the same time create a state-of-the-art arena that gives supporters a new experience just a stone's throw from our historic home, says the club's co-owner Jim Ratcliffe.
Premier League club does not disclose how much the new arena will cost, but there are reports that the price tag will land on 20.2-26.2 billion kronor (2-2.6 billion dollars), reports news agencies AFP and Bloomberg. How everything will be financed is not clear.
The club does not disclose a timeline either, but architect Norman Foster states that the construction will take five years.
Sportingly, Manchester United is in crisis with only a 14th place in Premier League with ten matches left to play. Economically, it's also going tough. The club's stock price has plummeted by 20 percent since the turn of the year and since the summer of 2024, 400-450 employees have been notified of redundancy.
