The man who shot the Slovak prime minister Robert Fico last year has been sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Pro-Russian Fico was shot several times in connection with an appearance in the town of Handlova, about 14 miles northeast of the capital Bratislava, and was seriously injured.

The 72-year-old man was arrested directly after the attack. He is now being tried for terrorism, as he according to the court acted "with the motive of preventing the government from functioning normally".

The man has claimed that his motive was that he did not agree with the government's policy, including the abolition of a special prosecutor's office that handles corruption, the cessation of military support to Ukraine and the government's view on culture.

"I decided to harm the prime minister's health, but I had no intention of killing anyone", the man's testimony reads.

Fico was shot in the abdomen and was taken to hospital where he underwent a five-hour long operation, followed by another two-hour long operation two days later. He has since recovered.
