A 55-year-old Cuban man died in a tumultuous incident at an ICE facility in Texas on January 3.
Relatives of the man have been in contact with the medical examiner who examined his remains. In a recorded conversation, the doctor is heard saying that the death will likely be classified as a suspicious homicide, given the injuries to the neck and chest, The Washington Post reports.
Another man held at the facility told the newspaper that he saw five guards physically intervene and choke him, after which he shouted that he couldn't breathe. He became lifeless and was later pronounced dead.
The Department of Homeland Security, under which ICE operates, denies the allegations, saying the man resisted violently after attempting to take his own life. Documentation of the death and the intervention does not provide further details about what happened.
There have been previous reports of substandard conditions in the facility, and at other ICE facilities.
