A 59-year-old man on a safari trip in northwestern Namibia in southern Africa has been killed by a lion, according to the police.

The man was camping together with other tourists at a luxury tent camp in the wilderness. He was attacked early in the morning when he was going to the toilet, says Ndeshipanda Hamunyela, spokesperson for the country's environmental department, to the local news site Informante.

Other campers managed to scare the lion away, but the man was already dead.

The incident will be further investigated by the police.

Lions roam around in the country's northwestern parts meet the desert environment. Approximately 60 adult lions and tens of cubs were found there in 2023. However, the number of lions is said to have decreased in recent months due to a decrease in prey.
