The man is suspected of a crime since he was responsible for navigation when the grounding occurred. The prosecutor had requested that he be detained, as there was a risk that the man, who is a foreign citizen, would leave the country if he was released on bail.
We also need to be able to continue the investigation without him influencing it. There are still some things to do, including hearing witnesses.
The suspected man denies any wrongdoing.
He claims that he has done everything he could in this situation and that this is an accident that should not be punishable, says Adrien Combier-Hogg.
It was on Sunday that a nearly hundred-meter-long bulk carrier ran aground. The foreign-flagged vessel was traveling from Gdansk in Poland to Setúbal in Portugal, loaded with scrap. On board, there are also 69,000 liters of diesel oil. There are currently no signs that the vessel has leaked oil, according to the Coast Guard, which expects a salvage plan from the shipping company during the day.
To be on the safe side, we have prepared an environmental rescue operation, says Karin Cars, press spokesperson for the Coast Guard.
