A man who sought care for headache was sent home from the emergency department and later died of an undetected bleeding in the brain, writes Södermanlands Nyheter. The case has now been reported to the Inspection for care and nursing (Ivo).

It was during the spring this year that the man sought emergency care for headache and had to wait eight hours for a medical examination, according to the report to Ivo.

After an X-ray examination, which did not show any signs of bleeding, the man was sent home. But just a few hours later, he sought care again as the pain had worsened.

A new X-ray showed a bleeding in the brain, which the man received emergency care for, but his life could not be saved.

In the report, it is stated that another type of examination could have been performed at the first occasion to exclude bleeding with greater certainty, but this was not done as the man was taking blood-thinning medication.
