"The incident analysis that has been conducted shows several errors that contributed to the delayed treatment during the first day of care, resulting in serious harm", says chief physician Ola Blomqvist in a press release.
The man's bowel obstruction was initially assessed as mild. Due to a lack of space, he was not placed on the surgical ward and a new assessment by a specialist in surgery was delayed. When it was made, the decision was to wait with the operation on the bowel.
Before the man could be operated on, he suffered a cardiac arrest, which led to extensive brain damage. After a few days, life-sustaining measures were discontinued.
The hospital has made a report to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate according to lex Maria.
