The detention hearing took place at Solna District Court on Wednesday afternoon. The man was detained on probable grounds suspected of gross unauthorized intelligence activities against a person.
"Now the investigation work continues, and due to the ongoing preliminary investigation secrecy, I cannot provide any further information about the case at present," says prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist in a press release.
Earlier in the day, the prosecutor stated that "the man is suspected of having, on behalf of the Chinese intelligence service, illegally gathered information and intelligence about individuals in the Uyghur environment."
The man denies the allegations, according to Göteborgs-Posten.
He has been detained since Sunday, and was previously arrested in absentia for two days according to the detention request submitted to the court.
The case is "very sensitive" and in an early stage, according to the prosecutor.
According to court documents, there is another person suspected in the case, but that person has not been requested to be detained. It is also unclear what allegations have been made against that person.
China has been accused for years of widespread human rights violations against the Muslim minority Uyghurs. According to several investigations and research reports, hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs have been placed in internment camps in Xinjiang, where testimonies of torture, forced labor, sexual abuse, and aggressive indoctrination are numerous.
