"A 23-year-old man is being charged with several types of serious terrorist crimes linked to IS. I allege that he is a participant in the terrorist organization IS," says senior prosecutor Carl Mellberg, who was the head of the preliminary investigation.

The man has used cryptocurrency to transfer money to IS and has made two trips with the aim of joining IS in Somalia, according to the indictment.

His childhood friend and fellow traveler became the first person in Sweden to be convicted of participating in a terrorist organization in February of this year. He was sentenced to three years and three months in prison for the same types of terrorist crimes that the 23-year-old is now charged with.

Unclear status

The prosecutor does not want to comment on whether the 23-year-old had a significant role within IS.

Only IS can answer that and it will probably be difficult to get an answer from them. I can't answer exactly what his status has been.

According to the lawsuit, the man's financial contribution to IS amounted to just over 8,000 kronor. But the prosecutor believes that this is a serious crime - it is not the amount that determines whether the crime is serious, but who is the recipient.

He is also charged with attempting to transfer another nearly 40,000 kronor.

Sent back

Both trips, which the prosecutor alleges were trips for terrorism, ended with government intervention. During the first trip, which began in September 2023, Ethiopian authorities intervened and sent him home before he could set foot in Somalia. On the second trip to Somalia in March 2024, he and his traveling companion were stopped immediately upon landing and sent back, according to the prosecutor.

The main hearing in the case is scheduled to start on December 3 in Attunda District Court.

The new terrorism law came into force on June 1, 2023. The intention is to be able to punish actions aimed at "strengthening, promoting or supporting" a terrorist organization.
