More than 130 people were injured when a car drove into a crowd of Liverpool fans celebrating their league title last spring. When the trial began on Tuesday, the 54-year-old suspect broke down in tears.

On May 26 this year, a Ford Galaxy Titanium ploughed into people, including children, who had gathered in central Liverpool after the city's football team won the Premier League. Police said the man managed to get past the barriers by closely following an ambulance.

The driver was arrested at the scene and, according to police, had high levels of drugs in his blood when he drove into the crowd. No possible motive has been determined.

The 54-year-old is charged with 31 counts of crime, nine of which involve aggravated assault causing bodily harm.

When asked to confirm his name on the first day of the court hearing, he began to cry and held his head in his hands, the BBC reports .

The suspect denies the allegations.

The trial is expected to last three to four weeks.
