The municipality's staff managed to isolate the leak within ten minutes of the alarm sounding.
However, since it was one of the main pipes that burst, large amounts of water still managed to leak out and spread through central Jönköping on Monday morning.
It's reported that there's rushing water on the streets, but we're on the scene and trying to limit it so it doesn't flow into buildings, said the rescue service's operations manager at lunchtime.
The leak, which occurred on Södra Strandgatan, left thousands of people without water for a while.
"Rushing in"
At the same time, shops and restaurants were affected, and shop owners testified that the water came "like a wave" and "just rushed in".
According to Jönköping Municipality, around 15 properties suffered water damage. Several businesses in the area were also affected by flooding after a heavy rainfall last year.
Some of those affected now were also affected then. I know some who had just finished renovating, says Roger Rohdin.
Large hole
The main pipe that burst has a diameter of 70 centimeters.
A large hole, about ten meters wide, has formed in the road where the leak occurred, and the surrounding area is cordoned off due to the risk of the ground being undermined.
It's cordoned off because it's dangerous to walk on the ground there.
It took ten minutes from when my staff received the alarm until the leak was closed. Yet, there's still this much damage. Then you understand how much force it is and how much water it's about.
It's still unclear how long it will take to repair the leak.
We're pumping away the water now and will dig down to repair the leak. But we'll see when we get down what kind of damage it is and how long it will take, says Roger Rohdin.
On Tuesday, the main pipe that burst will be inspected, and the repair work will begin.
According to Jönköping Municipality, all affected properties should have had their water and electricity restored.
