More than 20,000 residents in Russian regions near Ukraine are without power after Ukrainian attacks, local authorities said on Sunday.

Ukraine is reported to have attacked a thermal power plant in Voronezh, Russia, The Kyiv Independent reports, citing several sources. Unverified footage circulating on social media appears to show an explosion at the plant.

A rocket attack late on Saturday also caused serious damage to the electricity and heating network in Belgorod, writes the border region's governor Vyacheslav Gladkov on Telegram.

In the Kursk region further west, a fire is reported to have broken out at a power plant, cutting off residents' access to electricity.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow stated, according to the Ansa news agency, that the country's air defenses shot down 44 Ukrainian drones during the night of Sunday, most of them over the Bryansk region near Ukraine.
