Several thousand demonstrators - according to some reports, tens of thousands - were met by around 7,000 police officers in Geneva on Sunday. According to local media, the protest against the upcoming G7 meeting began peacefully, but degenerated during the afternoon.
Police used tear gas to disperse more masked protesters who threw paving stones at officers. Images also show them smashing windows, damaging a bus shelter and setting a car on fire not far from the UN building in the city.
The G7 summit will take place June 15-17 in the small French spa town of Évian-les-Bains. World leaders will arrive at the nearest major airport, in Geneva, Switzerland.
The financial city of Geneva still remembers the unrest at the G8 meeting in Évian-les-Bains in 2003, when the city was shaken by riots and extensive damage.
