On Sunday, Lindberg and Mdludi celebrated by far the Swede's biggest career victory. The triumph in the DP World Tour competition in Turkey was enough to qualify for next week's PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club outside Philadelphia, but Lindberg will have to do without his South African caddie.
"I would have loved to have him with me, but now that it wasn't possible, I feel it's nice to have someone who knows my game and has been there before," says the 33-year-old.
Friend steps in
The choice therefore fell on 38-year-old friend Jacob Glennemo, who himself has competed as a golf professional and was ranked 382nd in the world at best. Glennemo has previously carried Lindberg's clubs at a few competitions and is actually the one of the duo who has the most major experience.
"He was a caddie for Simon Forsström and was at the US Open a few years ago. He still has some experience; I think he will be good."
“Feels a bit surreal”
Mikael Lindberg is home in Stockholm this week, recharging after Sunday's victory, which gave him a prize check worth around 4.3 million kronor.
"I can find myself thinking 'Shit, I won.' It still feels a bit surreal. When you look at everything from the world ranking (129th) to the Race to Dubai (seventh) and see your name so high up... it doesn't really feel like it has sunk in," Lindberg says when TT meets him after a training session at Bro Hof.
How did you celebrate the victory?
"There were 10-12 of us, Swedish players with their own. We sat in a bar for two to three hours and chatted, then it was dinner and after that some of us played a little bowling. I felt it a little the next day. But there was only joy in that hangover."
