Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson said earlier in the day that she sees no conditions for forming a government, but the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament) will still vote on her as prime minister.
“I will lose,” she says.
Andersson is now giving up her attempts to form a new government. She announced this to the speaker of the Riksdag on Tuesday.
“At present, there are no conditions for forming a government that the Riksdag can tolerate,” Andersson said at a press conference.
However, the Riksdag will still vote on her as prime minister on Thursday.
“I will lose such a vote,” Andersson says.
She points out that she has reached no agreement with other parties on cooperation in government, so a majority in parliament is expected to vote against her.
Andersson still sees a point in holding a vote on the prime minister, as it would increase pressure in the process of forming a government and could lead parties to change their positions.
She thinks the most reasonable course now is for the speaker to give the task of exploring the possibility of forming a government to Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson.
