France's president Emanuel Macron visited Norway's capital Oslo on Monday, the evening before the first day of the NATO summit.
The purpose of the visit was, according to Macron's office, to emphasize France's commitment to the Nordic and Arctic regions – especially from a security perspective.
Norway, which is a member of the Arctic Council, is just one of many countries that have interests in the Arctic. China, Russia, and the USA also make claims on the area.
During the visit to Oslo, Macron met Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. The two leaders were expected to, among other things, sign an agreement on defense and energy policy.
Last week, Macron visited Greenland. He then marked his opposition to the USA's president Donald Trump and his statements about taking over Greenland.
Greenland is not for sale, said Macron during the visit.
