France's President Emmanuel Macron now admits that his decision to dissolve parliament and call new elections last summer has created more division than solution for the country.

He said this in his traditional New Year's speech, which was seen by millions of French TV viewers.

The opposition reacts quickly, demanding the president's resignation:

"It's not enough to acknowledge responsibility, you must also take the consequences: resignation," wrote Manuel Bombard, coordinator for the Left Party Unsubmissive France, on the X platform.

It has been a turbulent time in French politics over the past year. Last summer, Macron dissolved parliament and called for new elections, which did not lead to a clear majority in the National Assembly. On Christmas Eve, a new government took office – the fourth in a year.

In his New Year's speech, the president also said that the French will have to make certain decisive decisions in 2025, which analysts interpret as Macron planning to hold referendums.

I will ask you to decide on some of the decisive issues. Each and every one of you will have a role to play, he said.
