The opposition reacts quickly, demanding the president's resignation:
"It's not enough to acknowledge responsibility, you must also take the consequences: resignation," wrote Manuel Bombard, coordinator for the Left Party Unsubmissive France, on the X platform.
It has been a turbulent time in French politics over the past year. Last summer, Macron dissolved parliament and called for new elections, which did not lead to a clear majority in the National Assembly. On Christmas Eve, a new government took office – the fourth in a year.
In his New Year's speech, the president also said that the French will have to make certain decisive decisions in 2025, which analysts interpret as Macron planning to hold referendums.
I will ask you to decide on some of the decisive issues. Each and every one of you will have a role to play, he said.
