Brics countries called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza during a meeting in Rio de Janeiro. We cannot remain indifferent to the genocide that Israel is perpetrating in Gaza, said the host of the summit, Brazil's President Lula da Silva.

The countries in the so-called Brics group – which, among other things, consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – also demand a "full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and all occupied Palestinian territories".

The statement is made at a time when new negotiations between Israel and Hamas are underway.

The Brics group includes Israel's archenemy Iran, which Russia has close ties to.

Lula da Silva also criticized the decision of NATO countries to increase their defense investments to five percent of GDP from 2035.

It is always easier to invest in war than in peace, said Lula in his opening speech.

The total eleven countries in the group, which together make up about half of the world's population, are divided on many issues but formulated another common stance in the form of criticism of the US import tariffs.
