"I have the right to veto, and they (Congress) have the right to override my veto. Those are the rules," the president states.
A heated debate preceded the recent votes in Congress when the proposal was voted through, and on Sunday tens of thousands of people demonstrated against the plans in cities including the capital Brasília.
“Those convicted of attacking democracy must take their punishment,” writes Gleisi Hoffmann, minister responsible for relations between the various institutions of Brazilian democracy, on social media after the Senate approved the proposal on Thursday.
The text of the law means reduced sentences for the various crimes that those involved in the coup attempt after the 2022 election were convicted of. The right-wing radical Bolsonaro's lawyers have previously appealed the verdict against him, which failed when the country's highest court instead upheld it.
