Russian lugers have new hope of competing in the Olympics after a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Friday that could also open the way for Russian skiers who were denied entry by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (ISF) earlier in October.

The Russian Luge Federation won a half-victory in an appeal to CAS when the court ruled that the International Luge Federation (FIL) must now begin assessing which Russian skaters meet the requirements to compete under a neutral flag.

However, Cas said no to the Russian Luge Federation's demand that all its active members be allowed to start competing internationally again.

There, they followed FIL's line of excluding Russian skaters for safety reasons.

According to the AP news agency, the half victory could open up for Russian participation in skiing as well.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (Fis) recently refused to lift the suspension of skiers from Russia and Belarus that has been in place since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The Russian Ski Federation reacted with anger and has said that it will appeal the FIS decision.

The International Olympic Committee, IOC, opened up the entry of neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus to the Summer Olympics in Paris last year, but the IOC is letting the various sports federations decide for themselves how they want to do it.

To compete under a neutral flag, athletes from Russia and Belarus must not have actively supported the war or have connections to the Russian military.

No teams are allowed.
