A man in his 30s sought medical attention in Ludvika for pain in his scrotum, which he believed was due to a twisted testicle.
The doctor, after consulting a colleague, diagnosed epididymitis. Since the sedimentation rate was normal, only anti-inflammatory medication was recommended.
After six days, the man returned with ongoing symptoms. He was referred to Falu hospital, where it was established that a testicle had died due to insufficient blood supply and needed to be surgically removed.
Region Dalarna writes in connection with a Lex Maria notification to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate that testicular torsion can be a difficult diagnosis. It must be addressed immediately, and the man should have been referred for emergency care already at the first visit.
The staff has been informed to prevent something similar from happening in the future, according to the region.
