Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva died in a car accident in Spain last week. Now Liverpool is retiring his jersey number 20 for all eternity. Something that happens for the first time in the club's 133-year history.
"It was crucial for us to involve Diogo's wife Rute and his family in the decision", says Michael Edwards, CEO of the club's owners Fenway Sports Group, in a statement.
He continues:
"It is a unique tribute to a unique and wonderful person. He will forever be our number 20."
Diogo Jota will also be honored in connection with Liverpool's preseason match against Preston on Sunday.
