The guests Arsenal got a nightmare start. Already after five minutes, the giant central defender William Saliba was forced to leave injured and was replaced by the summer acquisition Cristhian Mosquera.
Arsenal was then close to scoring two times before the break. Noni Madueke cut in from the right and fired a dangerous shot and shortly thereafter Riccardo Calafiori sent a long-range shot just outside the post.
Free kick goal
In the second half, Liverpool increased the pace and most people probably thought that the lead goal was a fact when Hugo Ekitike pushed the ball into the net after a rebound. The joy was however short-lived. After VAR review, the goal was disallowed for offside.
It then took until the 83rd minute of the game before the deadlock was broken. Liverpool created a free kick which the Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai beautifully curled in to 1–0, a result that stood for the rest of the game.
Liverpool tops the Premier League table with this win on maximum nine points. Arsenal is third with six points scored.
Fiasko for Man City
Earlier on Sunday, Brighton sensationally won at home against the star-studded Manchester City. Man City took an early 1–0 lead through, as so many times before, Erling Haaland.
Brighton did not give up, however, and turned the tables through the veteran James Milner from the penalty spot and the German Brajan Gruda who made a beautiful solo goal.
The loss was Manchester City's second straight in league play.
