The Parliament in Lithuania voted on Thursday to leave the Ottawa Treaty, which bans the use of landmines.

The withdrawal from the agreement was voted through with a clear majority and will come into force in six months.

The Baltic NATO countries – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – announced in March this year that they want to leave the agreement as a consequence of Russia's warfare in Ukraine. The countries then expressed a concern that they would be exposed next.

In a joint statement, they stated that "it is important to develop all means to strengthen our deterrent and defense capabilities".

Latvia was the first to leave the agreement. Then, Finland also announced that they plan to do the same thing.
