Weissbach thus becomes the fourth Swede to play in the KHL right now and the first to go directly from the SHL to play in Russia since the war in Ukraine broke out on February 24, 2022, Expressen writes.

After several years abroad, Weissbach moved back to Gothenburg two years ago. In May, SHL club Frölunda announced that the forward would not be offered a contract extension after an injury-plagued season. The contract with the Russian KHL club is for one year.

SKA St. Petersburg is owned by the state-owned Russian gas giant Gazprom. The club's chairman, Gennady Timchenko, has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and is one of the most powerful people in the country, Forbes reports. He is subject to sanctions from the US, UK and EU.

Last season, Swedes Fredrik Claesson, Robin Press and Dmytro Timashov played in the Russia-based league.
