Libya's Health Minister and several high-ranking officials have been arrested in a corruption scandal involving the import of cancer medicines.

The Minister Ramadan Boujenah is accused of having violated the "rules for treatment medicines against cancer" from Iraq, according to the prosecution authority.

The Minister is part of the Government of National Unity (GNU) which is seen as the legitimate government by, among others, the UN; but which only controls parts of the country. The eastern part of Libya is controlled by the warlord Khalifa Haftar's militia. The Prime Minister within GNU is Abdul Hamid al-Dabaib.

The country's government has been fragmented since the previous leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown by rebel groups backed by NATO forces in 2011.
