The administration's attempt to abolish the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) endangers the country's libraries and violates the law, claims the library association. It is now trying to get a court to revoke Trump's order to "maximally reduce" IMLS, according to New York Times.
The independent agency has been responsible since 1996 for supporting and financing museums, archives, and libraries across the country.
"We will not allow extremists to threaten our democracy by eliminating programs at IMLS and harming the children and communities that rely on libraries and the services and opportunities they provide," says ALA Chairman Cindy Hohl.
The Trump administration's "attack" does not in any way make Americans' lives better or easier, also claims Skye Perryman, Chairman of Democracy Forward, which is also behind the lawsuit. The organizations claim that only Congress can make a decision on such a large cutback.
