The Liberals say no to a government where The Sweden Democrats are included, announces party leader Simona Mohamsson. But SD's leader Jimmie Åkesson stands firm: SD is a government party or in opposition after the next election. He calls L's stance incomprehensible.

I want a bourgeois government, the Sweden Democrats are not a bourgeois party, says Mohamsson to TT.

On Friday, the Liberal Party's board will meet to decide on the sensitive issue of whether to accept ministerial posts for the Sweden Democrats ahead of the next election.

We want to go to the election on signing a new Tidö Agreement, says Simona Mohamsson on her way into the meeting.

At the meeting, Mohamsson will propose that the L should seek a new bourgeois government under the leadership of The Moderate Party – but say no to deepening cooperation with the SD.

Åkesson stands firm

Jimmie Åkesson has, however, issued an ultimatum: Either the SD sits in the government after the next election or they go into opposition. In a comment on X he stands by the message.

”After the next election, the Sweden Democrats are a governing party or a party in full opposition.”

”If the result of the election in just over a year gives a continued Tidö majority, which includes The Liberals, they need to change this message when the election is completed.”

He further says that the L's stance must appear "incomprehensible" to voters.

Simona Mohamsson lists in a debate article in DN three reasons why the SD, in her opinion, is not a possible governing party. The first is that the party does not behave.

”A governing party does not have troll factories or have close ties to Koran burnings during the work to get Sweden into NATO”.

Mohamsson also believes that the party lacks commitment to expanded market economy, deepened EU cooperation, and international cooperation.

For the third, the SD is not a party accepted by "block-changing liberal-minded voters", writes the L leader.

”New Tidö Agreement”

On a question about how she thinks the decision will affect the opinion polls, Mohamsson answers:

My full focus is that we now implement everything that is in the Tidö Agreement and that I have now presented that we want to sign a new Tidö Agreement ahead of the next election, she says and continues:

That direction I think is best for Sweden and for The Liberals.

According to an opinion poll that the L themselves have commissioned, the SD cooperation has led to the party losing voters.

The party will make a final decision on the issue at the national meeting in November.
