The move comes after the Swedish Board of Forensic Medicine warned about the dangers of strangulation during sex, a phenomenon that has become increasingly common among young people.
We need to have normative legislation that is very clear that one cannot consent to strangulation in sexual contexts, says Minister for Equality Nina Larsson (L) to Ekot.
The Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine has a government mandate to increase knowledge about strangulation, including in sexual contexts, and has, among other things, produced a new knowledge overview on the subject. It states that it is not possible to determine when strangulation becomes fatal and that there is a risk of long-term effects on the brain.
The Liberals will now pursue the issue further in the government and hope to obtain an investigation into new legislation.
We cannot have a situation where we risk normalizing violence or rape and where people are expected to put up with different forms of violence, says Nina Larsson.
