Left Party Refers Swedish Ministers to Constitutional Committee Over Handling of Joakim Medin Case

The Left Party is reporting the ministers for foreign affairs and justice to the Committee on the Constitution (the parliamentary oversight committee) over their handling of the trial of journalist Joakim Medin.

“Here the government has made an error in handling the matter. Gunnar Strömmer has admitted it himself. So it seems reasonable that the Committee on the Constitution examines how this could happen and what consequences it has,” Vänsterpartiet’s (the Left Party) foreign policy spokesperson Håkan Svenneling tells Dagens ETC.

The complaint is directed at Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard (M). It concerns translation errors in the government’s response to Turkey’s request to allow Joakim Medin to defend himself from Sweden.

In the response, a question about legal aid was translated as “extradition”, and Medin’s published journalism was described as “criminal acts”.

“Last week we saw in black and white that the Ministry of Justice had made mistakes in its communication with Ankara,” Medin tells ETC.
