An Austrian man who left his weakened girlfriend to fetch help on Austria's highest mountain has been sentenced to five months' probation for manslaughter.

According to the court, the man, who is an experienced mountaineer, was grossly negligent both during the preparations for the climb and on the mountain, Kronen Zeitung reports.

The couple had started their hike late in January 2025 and were then further delayed by a tangled rope. The woman's condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly, but the couple did not call for help. Eventually, she became too weak to continue and the man reportedly left her to get help.

"She told me to save myself," the man said during the trial.

The woman froze to death on the mountain.

The man must also pay 9,600 euros, equivalent to just over 102,000 kronor, in fines.
