"The Lebanese government confirms its commitment... to continue implementing the ceasefire agreement until February 18", says Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati in a statement.
The Israeli forces were originally supposed to withdraw on Sunday in accordance with the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. The USA announced late on Sunday evening that the agreement had been extended.
The news came after a violent evening in Lebanon. In at least two border areas in the southern part of the country, the Israeli army opened fire on residents who tried to return to their villages, according to the Health Department. 22 people were killed and over 120 injured.
Demonstrators, some of whom carried Hezbollah flags, tried to enter several villages in the border area to protest against Israel not having withdrawn its troops from southern Lebanon.
Israel did not comment on the reports of deaths, but confirmed that its army "had fired warning shots in several places".
