The funeral of Orthodox rabbi Eli Schlanger, who was killed in the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, will be held on Wednesday. It is the first funeral for any of the victims of the mass shooting that targeted a Jewish festival.

The funeral at a synagogue in Bondi is surrounded by a large police force. A large number of people have gathered to mourn 41-year-old Eli Schlanger. He leaves behind a wife and five children, the youngest just two months old.

"Eli was torn away from us while doing what he loved," said Rabbi Levi Wolff, who is holding the live-streamed ceremony, according to ABC News .

By spreading love and joy and caring for those around him with endless self-sacrifice during his life and death, he watched over us as one of the highest and holiest souls.

The funeral was also attended by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, federal opposition leader Sussan Ley and former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Later on Wednesday, more funerals will be held for the victims of the attack.

15 people were killed and around 40 people were injured in the terrorist attack, which police say was inspired by ISIS. One of the perpetrators was killed during the attack and the other is being treated in hospital under police guard.
