In 2025, nearly 380,000 women over the age of 45 were treated with hormone therapy for estrogen deficiency, according to figures from the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms is controversial. Research suggests that the risk of cardiovascular disease can be reduced with early treatment, but long-term treatment can increase the risk of breast cancer.

"We know that if the treatment is started close to the last menstrual period, it has great benefits, which in most cases outweigh the risks," Angelica Lindén Hirschberg, gynecologist and professor at the Karolinska Institutet, told SVT.
