Rory McIlroy drew the longest straw by making a birdie on the third playoff hole while Joakim Lagergren made par. Both players made birdies the first times they played the 18th hole, a par-five.
Both finished -17 after four days of play and both shot 66 strokes on the last day. Lagergren was in the lead after Friday's 62-round, but he then lost on Saturday when it became 73 strokes.
During the final round at The K Club, the 33-year-old Swede made an impressive eagle on hole 16, which took him to the lead.
A birdie on the 18th hole then made many believe it would be decisive as it took him into the lead with two strokes.
Superstar McIlroy wanted otherwise, however, and needed to make an eagle on the last hole to catch up. Said and done, McIlroy arranged an eagle and it all went to a playoff.
Lagergren was close, but a second win on the European Tour will have to wait. The only one so far came in Sicily in 2018. He has, however, played well at K Club before. Last year, he won a Challenge Tour event there.
