Beyoncé or Taylor Swift? The winner would become historic with the most awards from the MTV gala ever – but it was neither of them. Instead, Lady Gaga took home the prestigious category best artist. I cannot describe what this means to me, she said.

It was an emotional Lady Gaga who with a trembling voice dedicated the prize to her fans.

Being an artist is trying to bring people's souls together all over the world. Being an artist is a discipline and a craft that is about reaching someone's heart roots and reminding them to dream, she said in her speech.

Performed with prize

Lady Gaga was nominated in twelve categories and took home four prizes, including best artist and best collaboration with Bruno Mars.

But the celebration was short-lived for the pop queen – who immediately after the first prize ceremony hastened away to the Madison Square Garden arena in New York to take the stage as part of her tour "The mayhem ball". There she was seen later in the evening performing with her statuette.

Still a tie

Prior to this year's MTV Video Music Awards, many eyes were on the category best artist – but not because of Lady Gaga.

Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were both nominated in the same category and thus competed to become the most awarded artist in MTV gala history. Both have 30 wins and are thus tied, but Gaga's win means that they will share the prize podium for another year.

Swedish Zara Larsson was nominated for best choreography for the video for "Pretty ugly", but had to go home empty-handed. Instead, it was Doechii who was awarded for the choreography of "Anxiety".
