This was announced by the Syrian Ministry of Defense in a statement.
Sipan Hamo is also highly ranked within the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The appointment follows an agreement between the government in Damascus and the SDF, which came after the ceasefire announced in January.
The agreement included a provision to “unify Syrian territory and fully integrate” the Kurdish areas. Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa - a former jihadist leader who led the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad in 2024 - has also promised the Kurds increased rights and that Kurdish will be given official language status.
