"You think about those who were in the room, the president, of course, but also everyone else who was at this very, very big event. It could have had absolutely terrible consequences," says Kristersson.
President Donald Trump has previously been the target of two assassination attempts, and there are reports that the shooter was looking to harm people within the administration. Kristersson emphasizes that he does not know more than what has been reported in the media.
"We don't know anything about the underlying causes, but that doesn't matter because it's just as terrible under any circumstances. It's something that shouldn't happen. We're glad no one was hurt. It could have been very bad."
On X, Kristersson writes that violence and threats against politicians and journalists undermine democracy and must never be accepted.
