The Moderates made an election promise less than a week ago that preschool and after-school care would be free of charge. Now parents will have to pay a fee, up to a certain limit. According to the Moderates, it will cost around ten billion to allow parents to avoid fees.
According to the Moderate leader, there is now no rhyme or reason in the fact that it should cost money to send children to preschool, since it is such an important part of a child's schooling.
Preschool should be seen as an important, integrated part of Swedish school. I have never understood why we have fees for such an important part of school, which ensures that young children get a faster start in primary school, that young children who do not speak Swedish at home get better opportunities to learn Swedish, which means they can do better at school, says Kristersson and adds:
We have long thought that this (read: the fees) should be removed.
