Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) currently sees no possibility of moving forward with a bill to revoke already-granted permanent residence permits. He says the investigation must be supplemented if the bill is to be implemented.

The government and the Sweden Democrats disagree on the proposal to convert permanent residence permits into temporary ones.

On Tuesday, SD party leader Jimmie Åkesson showed up late to his own press conference because he had been in a meeting with the other party leaders in the Tidö Collaboration, where the issue was discussed.

"We don't completely agree," he said.

“No drama”

However, Ulf Kristersson says he does not see any drama in the matter.

"The investigation has been received and we are looking at it now. It has not fulfilled everything that the directives set out for that investigation, so we are now looking at the possibility of supplementing it," he says.

According to the government, the inquiry lacks proposals for a realistic path to Swedish citizenship for those who genuinely want to be in Sweden.

So it must be supplemented if it is to be implemented.

What it means that the investigation will be supplemented "remains to be seen," according to Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M).

When asked whether the proposals will be implemented before the election, Strömmer says it is up for discussion.

Both where such a reform should land in terms of content and over what time horizon it should be implemented, he says.

Harsh criticism

Several consultation bodies have been strongly critical of the proposal to revoke permanent residence permits for asylum seekers and their relatives, which was submitted by the government's investigators last fall.

According to the investigator, between 98,000 and 180,000 people would be covered by the new law. The assessment was that the vast majority of them would be allowed to stay in Sweden if the new law were to be introduced, as they already meet the requirements for citizenship or for obtaining a permanent residence permit in Sweden.
