Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) is downplaying the importance of a broad energy agreement. At the same time, he says that he feels that there is broad consensus in parliament on new nuclear power, despite failed energy talks. A picture that the Social Democrats question.

In mid-September, it became clear that there would be no broad energy agreement, after the talks broke down.

The main reason for this is that S wants offshore wind power to be able to receive government support in the same way as nuclear power. Something that the Sweden Democrats are completely against.

However, M leader Ulf Kristersson downplays the importance of an agreement.

I have said many times that I am in favor of agreements and unity, but on the energy side, most agreements over the years have been ones that rather hide disagreements than solve anything, he says when TT meets him during a visit to Rudbecksskolan in Sollentuna on Tuesday.

45 years of bickering

Recently, Minister of Energy and Enterprise Ebba Busch (KD) has criticized her Tidö colleagues for not being able to agree on the issue.

However, Ulf Kristersson does not see any major division.

My impression is that we are now establishing a broad consensus on new nuclear power in Sweden. As it stands, we will have 80 percent support in the Swedish parliament in December.

He also thinks that Vattenfall's agreement with Industrikraft, which consists of a number of heavy industrial companies, indicates that "in practice" there is a new agreement.

After 45 years of constant bickering about nuclear power, we can now make the decision that gives the business community the courage to make their investment decisions, he says.

In December, the spending area in the budget that includes the financial framework for financing nuclear power will be debated in the Riksdag.

But the Social Democrats' energy policy spokesperson Fredrik Olovsson questions what Ulf Kristersson means by consensus.

The government and the SD have a majority so they will make a decision on this.

But we will not vote for the government's budget, he says.

“Regrettable”

Olovsson says he is surprised that Ulf Kristersson is playing down the importance of an agreement.

The entire business community, all stakeholders, think it is extremely important that we have a broad agreement.

It is very regrettable that the Prime Minister has not managed to get the Sweden Democrats on board on this issue, he says.
