Gaza Debate Intensifies as Swedish PM Defends Government Policy

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) fends off the opposition's criticism of the government's gas policy. You are deliberately whipping up the mood in Sweden and pretending that Sweden is not doing anything, he says.

The Riksdag leader debate is coming up on the war and the crisis in Gaza. The Green Party's spokesperson Daniel Helldén is the first to attack the government's line.

What Netanyahu is putting the population of Gaza through is a genocide. The government chooses to say almost nothing and that is unworthy, says Helldén.

The government has not condemned a single war crime committed by Israel in Gaza.

The V leader Nooshi Dadgostar urges the government to put pressure on Israel to end the war.

Before economic sanctions, end all arms trade with Israel, resume support for Unrwa, she says.

Clearly and clearly condemn this detestable murder. It is forced displacement, it is ethnic cleansing, it is genocide, it must come to an end.

“Absolutely appalling”

Kristersson states that the war in Gaza is “absolutely appalling” and states that Israel receives criticism on very good grounds. He claims that Sweden has doubled its support to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip and that only four other countries give more than Sweden. The Swedish support is given according to Kristersson via other aid organizations.

All this you know. You are after something completely different. You are now deliberately whipping up the mood in Sweden and pretending that Sweden is not doing anything for people who are extremely badly off in Gaza, he says.

The Swedish left would have had a bit more credibility in these matters if you had ever chosen to direct the criticism at Hamas, at those who take hostages and those who now want to take the conflicts from the Middle East into Swedish streets and squares. There you are completely silent.

Kristersson also accuses “the left” of being silent about “terrorism romanticism that is spread, about all the faces of Hamas leaders that are shown in different demonstrations”.

There you say nothing. You are crawling for people who want to do harm to other people.

Warns of “left turn”

Kristersson began the debate by warning of the Social Democrats' “left turn”.

He points to reduced working hours, abolished waiting period and increased benefits for those who do not work.

All know who will pay, it will be higher taxes for those who work, says the Prime Minister.

According to Kristersson, a lot is going in the right direction in Sweden right now. The Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson gives a different picture. She points to low growth, high unemployment and rising prices.

The government has not been able to protect the Swedish people through this crisis, says Andersson.

She also highlights the continued gang shootings.

This situation requires strong leadership that is not occupied with quarreling with others.

Corrected: In an earlier version, there was an incorrect formulation about support to Ukraine. Correct is that it is about support to Gaza.
