Around a dozen "drone-like objects" are reported to have been detected in Polish airspace during the night and some of them have been shot down, according to the country's military leadership.
"The Russian aggressive war against Ukraine constitutes a threat to the entire European security", says Ulf Kristersson in a statement shortly after the violation and adds that Poland has every right to defend its airspace.
"We give our full support to Poland, as a NATO ally and EU member. Sweden and Poland stand united in our support for Ukraine".
Von der Leyen: Reckless
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen comes with a similar message when she holds her speech about the situation in the EU to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg.
Just today, we have seen a reckless and unprecedented violation of Polish and European airspace with over ten Russian Shahed drones. The EU stands in full solidarity with Poland, says von der Leyen and is met with standing applause.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha writes on X that Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to "escalate, expand his war and test the Western world" and calls for a united response.
Finland's President Alexander Stubb states on the same platform that the security situation is serious and what happened is unacceptable. "Russia bears the responsibility for this", writes Stubb.
Test boundaries?
Norway's Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide (AP) also describes what happened as "completely unacceptable" and very serious.
I am glad that Prime Minister Tusk and Polish authorities are in close contact with NATO about what happened, says Eide according to the news agency NTB and adds that he is in contact with his Polish and his Nordic and Baltic colleagues.
The Social Democrats' party leader Magdalena Andersson says that the incident is likely not the last of its kind.
I think the entire Swedish society should be prepared for Russia to continue testing boundaries.
