He emphasizes that the new law, which as a general rule requires, among other things, that a person has been in Sweden for at least eight years (compared with five years until June 5), will "strengthen the meaning of Swedish citizenship."
The Prime Minister recalls that it was in Strängnäs, near the place where he is speaking, that Gustav Vasa was elected king on June 6, 1523. He says Gustav Vasa "in his wildest imagination" could not have imagined what a "fantastic country he was then laying the foundation for."
"Today, let's celebrate what Sweden has actually become. And let's do it by taking advantage of everything that Sweden can actually become," urges Kristersson.
