The vote was completed on Wednesday night, close to the deadline that would have triggered Kosovo’s fourth election in less than two years.

The opposition agreed, after much wrangling, to vote for the government’s presidential candidate in exchange for a law limiting the powers of a special war crimes court. The court recently convicted four members of the former Kosovo Liberation Army.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti only managed to form a new government last month, after 18 months of political chaos. The crisis erupted after the 2025 parliamentary elections. Kosovo fell into a political deadlock that was not resolved by new elections in December last year, and the population was allowed to vote for a third time in June this year.
