An employee at the Kiruna municipality worked for over a year without a valid work permit. Now the employee, his manager and the municipality are being prosecuted for a crime against the Aliens Act, writes NSD.

The man worked within the social services department between February 2023 and June 2024 without a valid work permit, since his application for a renewed permit was submitted too late to the Migration Agency.

The unit manager who is being prosecuted denies the crime and says that she acted according to the municipality's routines for new recruitments and refers to the fact that she received clearance from the staffing and recruitment unit to offer the man a permanent employment.

My client believes that she has not done anything wrong, since she followed all the routines that the municipality had at the time, says her defender Vera Gärdemalm.

The municipality is being demanded to pay a fine of around 57,000 kronor. Kiruna municipality has now introduced a routine to check that new employees have a work permit.
