Key Senate races to watch in the US midterm elections

A series of high-stakes races are taking place in the US midterm elections. The contests expected to determine whether Democrats or Republicans control the Senate are especially worth watching:

1. Texas

Will Democratic pastor and state politician James Talarico make history, or will Texas's Trump-backed, scandal-plagued attorney general Ken Paxton win? Texas has been solidly Republican for decades but is now leaning more towards purple, a reference to states where Republicans and Democrats are roughly evenly matched.

2. Michigan

Will left-wing Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who trained as a doctor, become the new senator for the swing state of Michigan? Or will his Republican opponent, former congressman and FBI agent Mike Rogers, win the seat? Rogers has urged Trump to end the Iran war and this weekend received unexpected support from Democrats on El-Sayed's former primary rival, Representative Haley Stevens.

3. Maine

Can centrist veteran Republican Susan Collins, who has represented Maine in the Senate since 1997, hold off state senator Troy Jackson, who replaced the notorious oyster farmer Graham Platner, accused of rape?

4. South Carolina

Trump-backed Republican Darline Graham, who took over her late brother Lindsey Graham's Senate seat this summer, is now hoping to be formally elected to it. Her Democratic challenger is pediatrician Annie Andrews.

5. Ohio

The Ohio Senate race for Vice President JD Vance's old seat is between Republican Jon Husted, who was appointed to the seat when Vance became vice president, and Democrat Sherrod Brown, a former longtime senator who lost his re-election bid in 2024.

6. Kansas

If incumbent Republican Roger Marshall is forced to throw in the towel to Democratic pastor Adam Hamilton, history will be made in conservative Kansas. The state has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932.

7. Iowa

The close race is between Republican House member and former television journalist Ashley Hinson and state politician and Paralympic basketball gold medalist Josh Turek.

8. Alaska

The race in the northwestern corner of the United States is between Democratic former House member Mary Peltola and incumbent Republican Daniel S. Sullivan. But another, nonpartisan Daniel Sullivan is also on the ballot, and there is information that Democrats have recruited him. The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit in advance of a possible Democratic victory, citing confusion over the candidates' names.

Also in the mix: gubernatorial elections in Georgia, Ohio, Texas and Florida, and Senate elections in North Carolina and Georgia.
