The man in question, Adrián Simancas, was out paddling a kayak with his dad in Bahía El Águila in the Strait of Magellan, which separates Tierra del Fuego from the South American mainland. Then, a humpback whale suddenly broke the water's surface – and swallowed Simancas and his yellow kayak. Just a few seconds later, the pair resurfaced.

The incident was captured on film and quickly went viral.

Stay calm, stay calm, the father is heard saying in the video after his son was released from the giant whale's jaws.

Humpback whales can grow up to 18 meters in length and typically weigh over 30 tons. They are well-known for their leaps above the water's surface.

I thought I was dead, says Adrián Simancas to the AP news agency after the incident.

I thought it had eaten me, that it had swallowed me.

Father and son returned unharmed to land after the terrifying experience.
